An eXciting week!

This week was shorter than expected. But we packed in the fun!

On Tuesday we discovered that our letter of the week was X. Two of our friends had the letter X in their name! We traced the letter X, and made a construction paper xylophone! To help us understand what a xylophone actually is, we watched a short video of two people playing the xylophone. We observed that the musicians used mallets to play it and each of the bars ring at a different pitch to create a song.

Our books this week included “The Giraffe Made Her Laugh,” and “The Giraffe Who Was Afraid of Heights.”

We read through “The Giraffe Made Her Laugh” and added vocabulary words to our Word Wall. We snapped our fingers (or tried!) as we spelled out each word. We read this book again later in the week but this time we turned our attention to the rhyming words throughout the story. We thought of additional words that rhymed and shared them with the class!

In the story “The Giraffe Who Was Afraid of Heights” we read about a giraffe who acted bravely to save his friends from a dangerous situation. As we progressed through the story, we made predictions about what fear each new character might have. Before we got to the end, we guessed that the animals would overcome their fears. We used the pictures to help us make our prediction. We were correct!

The beginnings of our giraffe craft.

The ink dotters we used to paint our giraffe worked our hand muscles! In order to get the most paint, we had to squeeze the bottle and dot at the same time. After trying a few different ways we all got our creations painted. We added facial features and spots to our giraffe once the paint was dry!

We met Ms Heather in the garden twice this week. On Tuesday, we learned about methods for organizing our garden. We each colored and laid our our very own garden designs. Next we learned that some of the food we eat to nourish our bodies can also be nourishing for our garden. We made a mixture of coffee, egg shells and bananas. Then we added it into our garden beds to make sure our produce will grow big and strong!

In Jewish Studies, we practiced our morning prayers. Then Morah Miriam told us a story about why the ram’s horn is used to bring in the new year.

We love Music with Ms. Emily! We get to make lots of noise. But what’s even better is making songs together! This week we made music in small groups.

On Thursday in Science, Ms Heather read to us a book about the materials birds use to build their nests. Some birds use twigs, grass, string, and even rocks! We got to create our own nests using found materials in the garden. Each nest was a bit different even though we had access to the same items!

Our friends who stay for enrichment after lunch got to spend time making music with Mr. B, reading with Mrs. Hallett, and creating art with Mrs. Gutterman in the Day School.
